Considered the Father of Medicine, Hippocrates (born 460 BC) is reportedly having said: “It is necessary for a physician to know about nature, and be very eager to know, if he is going to perform any of his duties… what man is in relation to what he eats and drinks, and in relation to his habits generally, and what will be the effect of each upon each individual.”
It makes perfect sense that what we put in our bodies affects how our bodies maintain themselves. The nutrients in food enable the cells in out bodies to perform their necessary functions and without the needed nutrients metabolic processes slow down and even stop.
If we can forget about counting calories and concentrate on eating food as a way to create our health and reduce disease we can provide the body with the needed nourishment for growth and maintenance. Food is information.
Functional Medicine* maintains that chronic disease is almost always preceded by a period of declining health in one or more of the body’s systems. For example, did you know that 70% to 80% of the immune system is contained in the gastrointestinal system! Therefore, a person’s issues with immunity could be related to faulty digestion. Functional Medicine seeks to address declining health by providing the foods, thereby nutrients needed to restore function. This is a cost effective, non-invasive intervention that aims to stop the progression into disease.
Further, researchers have shown that the development of heart disease can be triggered by multiple factors. These factors include insulin resistance (we will discuss this in Episode 6 of our weekly Talking Wellness show), hypertension, heavy metal toxicity, stress, inflammation and more. Each of these factors can be influenced by nutrition!
It’s now believed that the food we eat is now a factor in conditions such as type II diabetes, obesity, heart disease, stroke and certain cancers. Our western diets are clearly providing the lack of balance in the nutrients to keep our bodies healthy. Each of us needs to DECIDE to make our health a priority by eating the right foods!
* Functional Medicine: The medical practice or treatments that focus on optimal functioning of the body and its organs, usually involving systems of holistic or alternative medicine.
